OVERVIEW:
"Tomorrow Taipa" is a volunteer project that has launched a Market Business Innovation Plan aimed at better preserving culturally rooted practices within existing techno-social systems.

By blending sincerity with innovation, the plan seeks to create a comprehensive market that combines practicality, entertainment, and modernization. This initiative will drive the transformation of the market and help preserve the cultural heritage of Macau's street markets.

MOTIVATION: "Guanye Street" is a well-known tourist attraction near my college. However, most of us may overlook the fact that it is located in a residential area in Macau. Over time, emerging industries have gradually replaced the shops that once served the local community. This shift inspired me to explore how design can preserve culturally situated practices within existing techno-social systems

Our research and design aimed to highlight how local culture often clashes with commercialized urban planning. I conducted surveys, physical experiments, and designed urban layouts and architecture to better understand how both local citizens and tourists could interact with and access local culture in a meaningful way.

MY ROLE:
As a CS student, I contributed to the feasibility analysis and conducted market research for the 'Market Business Innovation Plan.'

During the feasibility analysis, I used web scraping to analyze online reviews of local markets in Macau. Through long-tail keyword extraction, I created a data demand map that revealed ' local cuisine ' as one of the main attractions of Macau's local markets.

As a customer-centered designer, I’ve created two versions of the questionnaire, one for Macau citizens and the other for tourists, to gather their expectations and needs regarding Macau's local markets.

A JOURNEY OF“TOMMORROW TAIPA”

"Guanye Street" – a vibrant street that flows endlessly, bustling with both tourists and local residents.
The street is so lively, with a variety of shops clustered together, that almost everyone forgets it’s located in a residential area
At the end of the street, there’s an overlooked market that serves the needs of local residents, yet remains undeveloped.

How design can preserve culturally situated practices within existing unbalanced techno-social systems? In order to understand the true needs of both local residents and tourists, I first conducted web scraping using the keyword 'Macau street market' to extract long-tail keywords and generate a data demand map. Then, I designed two versions of the survey and conducted it online.

SURVEY FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS:
SURVEY FOR TOURISTS:

DATA ANALYSIS:
Insight 1:  Most residents go to the street market for leisure.

Insight 2: Transformation of the Local Market into a Modern Trendy Hub
Trendy Style
68.94%
Innovative Style
63.98%
Macau's local features 55.3%

Insight 3: An Emerging Demand for Pre-Packaged Meals in Fast-Paced Modern Living
In the "New Product Categories" section, 64.91% of respondents support introducing "fried snacks," while 54.39% support adding "pre-packaged meals."

Currently, the Taipa Street Market mainly sells semi-finished products and ingredients. As life becomes faster-paced, people are increasingly preferring prepared meals, and the market should consider offering products to meet the needs of local residents.

Insight 4: Price affordability is highly valued by local residents.

Through cross-analysis of local residents who choose the Taipa Street Market for daily necessities and their feedback on the market's shortcomings, we found that "unaffordable prices" was the most selected option by non-regular visitors.

Additionally, 70.21% of respondents who have not visited the Taipa Street Market also believe that Macau's current markets face pricing issues.

This suggests that high pricing is a key factor in their reluctance to use the Taipa street market for daily shopping.

During the roadshow, I designed a logo for our team and created a gift box featuring Portuguese elements to increase audience engagement, which we distributed for free as part of our team’s promotional products.

TEAM LOGO:
  • 明日 Taipa: Our group, named “ Tomorrow Taipa ”, focuses on the Taipa district. We aim to help build a bright future for Taipa.

  • 澳门凼仔街市: The name of the street market we are focusing on for redevelopment.
GIFT BOX:
Since Macau was a Portuguese colony, its history and culture have been deeply influenced by Portugal, particularly in areas such as architecture, cuisine, and language. I incorporated iconic Portuguese patterns into our design.

MARKET BUSINESS INNOVATION PLAN:
Our team was awarded honors by the Macau Municipal Affairs Bureau.
